Aidan's Priorities for Cambridgeshire & Peterborough
Aidan believes that young people are our future, and therefore need improved access to skills training and further education so that they have every opportunity to get on in life.
The Coronavirus crisis has had tragic consequences for many, and has also left businesses dealing with increased uncertainty. Aidan wants to ensure that businesses can get the support they need from local government and that the recovery helps to make our economy more resilient in the future.
The housing crisis has continued to worsen under the Conservatives. Aidan supports developing sustainable and affordable housing in the right parts of our region so that those who seek to own their own houses can get on the housing ladder.
Aidan wants to create a zero carbon strategy for the whole of Cambridgeshire & Peterborough. He believes that the Mayor is best placed to coordinate this project, working hand-in-hand with local councils in order to deliver a carbon free Cambridgeshire so that everyone can benefit from cleaner air and the preservation of our natural environment.
Making it easier for people to walk or cycle where possible, instead of driving, is something Aidan has long prioritised during his time on South Cambridgeshire District Council. He would like to continue this work as mayor, making sure that people all over Cambridgeshire have the footpaths and cycle lanes they need to live healthier and more environmentally friendly lifestyles.
Public transport is also a hugely important component in helping us to live greener lives, As Mayor, Aidan would like to set up franchised bus services across Cambridgeshire, to ensure that our communities are connected in a way that helps to take cars off our busy roads.
As Chair of the Greater Cambridge Partnership, which will be responsible for £1 billion worth of investment in the area over the next 15 years. Aidan is used to working collaboratively and across party lines to get things done. Aidan would like to see this done at the mayoral level, with integrated collaboration between the mayor and the various local councils. Political infighting should never be allowed to hold Cambridgeshire back.
Aidan would like to see the mayor's office scaled-back so that it is responsible for a leaner and more efficient operation, able to address the needs of the people of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough without taking power away from them or their democratically elected local representatives.
Aidan has always put local residents at the heart of his campaigns. He believes that the mayor should be no different, listening to the concerns of residents across Cambridgeshire and not just lobbyists.
